How Tim McGraw Made Sure His Daughters Knew About His Father

Tim McGraw never imagined the kind of life that awaited him beyond his small Louisiana hometown. Then, as a boy, he learned the truth—his real father was Tug McGraw, a Major League Baseball pitcher and World Series champion. That revelation didn’t just change how he saw his family, it reshaped his belief in what was possible. “When I found out Tug McGraw was my dad, it gave me something in my little town in Louisiana, something I would have never reached for,” Tim reflected. “How could I ever be angry?”

Tim didn’t meet Tug until he was 11. For years, he believed his stepfather was his real dad—until one day, after his mother’s divorce, he stumbled across his birth certificate in his grandparents’ closet. It listed his father’s name and occupation: professional baseball player. Shocked, Tim could hardly believe it. Ironically, before knowing the truth, he had been a genuine fan—Tug’s baseball card even hung on his wall.

Determined to meet him, Tim’s mother contacted Tug’s lawyer and drove them to Houston. They watched a game, played catch during batting practice, and had lunch. But the moment turned bittersweet when Tug told him, “We can be friends, but I don’t know if I’m your dad or not.” Tim tried again the following year, wearing his father’s jersey and calling to him from the bullpen, but was ignored. That painful day was the last time he saw Tug until he was 18.

In time, the two built a real relationship. Tim never carried resentment—only gratitude for the hope that knowledge had given him. When Tug passed away from brain cancer, Tim honored his memory by launching the Tug McGraw Foundation, supporting those affected by brain-related military trauma and glioblastoma. In 2008, he stood on a World Series mound, scattered his father’s ashes, and threw the first pitch of Game 3.

Now, at 58, Tim is preparing another tribute—headlining the first-ever all-day concert at the historic Field of Dreams in Iowa. It’s a fitting stage for a man whose own story began with a boy’s dream, a baseball card, and the belief that life could be bigger than he’d ever imagined.
